About the Instruments
Three families, one band. Every beginner starts from scratch — here’s what each group sounds and feels like.
Woodwinds
Flute
Bright, high melodies. Great for quick fingers and a strong ear.

A double-reed voice that carries over the whole band. Rewards patient players.

Bassoon
The low double reed — warm, characterful, and always in demand.

Clarinet
The most common starting point. Smooth tone across a huge range.

A jazz and concert band favourite, and quick to make a first sound on.

Trumpet
Carries the melody. Built for players with steady air and a good ear.

Rich, round tone at the centre of the band. Rewards a strong ear.

The slide brass — big sound, no valves, all ear and arm.

Warm low-brass melodies. Often the sound underneath the whole band.

The foundation of the band. We always have room for one more.

Snare, mallets and timpani. For strong rhythm and playing many instruments.
